Mrs. Locke's Legacy

In this short story, the narrator is caretaker for her father, who has Alzheimer's disease, and must sell her own home in another city in order to move in with him. When she returns to her home to ready it for sale, she has a moment of enlightenment in her back yard as she clears Mrs. Locke's legacy, a tangle of milkweed, from her garden.

In this issue, the poem "Sand Crabs" also appears on page 15.

A SHADOW OF HERSELF

Elderly Betty Dillard had cataract surgery, but it wasn't successful. She's now legally blind. Once an independent working woman, she's become dependent on her husband of forty years to do everything. She's always trusted him, but starts to feel insecure. These feelings come to a head when her out-of-town step-daughter overrides her "no visitors" request and stops by to see her father.
